Husband Goes to the Grocery Store = Problems

This is going to be short, though I could easily write eight pages on this topic.

As some of you may know from prior posts, my husband does NO housework. Not even the “man” stuff like mowing (well, he has done that twice in the year we’ve had a lawn–and each instance resulted in daylong dirty looks from him; also, I am the one who planted the lawn, so I don’t really think we can count those two mowing instances now that I think about it…)

ANYWAY, the one household-related thing he does is run errands for us. He rents movies, goes to the grocery store, stuff like this.

But most of the time, when he goes to the grocery store for stuff, he creates havoc. A LOT OF HAVOC. It doesn’t matter how many items he’s getting–four, two, one–there are going to be issues.

The other day, for example, I said, “Hey, we should probably stock up on rice.” (I know, I’m behind. Now that Costco NEVER has rice on the shelves, Holly Kay’s going to stock up. Good thinking…)

So, there are two main choices if you want a tasty, yet quality, “big” bag of rice–Mahatma and Gold Star. I asked my husband to get 2 big bags of Mahatma rice. I explained, “These bags will cost like $7, but the same size of the Gold Star will be like $20!!!”

Low and behold, my husband buys Gold Star. So, in one grocery trip, he got 2 bags of rice and managed to spend $43. I enjoyed that quite a bit. Wouldn’t you?

PS. Because of this incident, I now have new “instructions” on how to request that my husband pick up store items. (Yes, that’s correct–I’m being disciplined, if you will, for my husband’s error.) I am NOT to call and ask. I am NOT to send an instant message. I am to EMAIL the list–this way he can check it by cell phone in the store. Got it.

I got lucky.. my husband is a fantastic shopper. He even made his own printable fill in the blanks list to make the experience totally streamlined.

Bianka, I am totally speechless. I want to fool myself into thinking that this isn’t true. But it clearly is.

I assumed ALL husbands kind of made mistakes when going to the store. Instead, I learned that there is a husband (yours) who makes better shopping lists than ME.

    WOW.

Wow Bianka you are indeed lucky! Holly, what I do is write a list on paper. It should be very clear though, everything itemized, down to the brand and size (and sometimes even the description of the packaging). Of course, my husband will end up buying something NOT on the list and at the same time, MISS something on the list. I remember my dad being the same way…
The way I see it, though, I am quite thankful that I can ask the hubby to go out and do the groceries from time to time. ;)

my husband is very unreliable when it comes to running to the store, i hate to even ask. first off, he has dyslexia, so he doesn’t bother to read the labels - too much work. he just buys whatever looks like the thing i wanted him to buy, which does not always work out. i get refried beans instead of soup, etc. also, he thinks that if i ask for something, then getting multiples of that thing will somehow earn extra points. so he’ll bring home 3 boxes of whatever i needed instead of one, of course paying full price because he doesn’t check for a sale. my neighbor worked out a system with her boyfriend, who luckily is very easygoing. she makes a short list and pins it to his shirt, so he can’t lose it. then he is required to checkout only with female cashiers, where he hands the list to the cashier and requests a double-check to make sure he accurately purchased everything on the list. she swears by this method.

Franny, this is hilarious. I love the extra points with multiples. YES, I also get the refried beans rather than soup and so on.

I really like the neighbor’s system of pinning the list to his shirt. I wish I could see her boyfriend during his shopping trip. he he

There’s a rice shortage? hmmm, I should think of stocking up too, maybe next week. I don’t like sending my husband to the store because he buys EVERYTHING. He likes to try new stuff so he ends up spending twice as much as I expected with food I don’t know how to cook. But he does bring home the one thing I asked him to.
