Surreal Week and Lasting Images

I am having an interesting week full of impressions and images that I can’t let go of. Just today, these things happened:

1) I learned a fact about a person that indicates that this individual probably had a traumatic childhood. This individual has a slightly arrogant and harsh side that seems unfair (not to me, but in general).  But it made me really sad to imagine him in a repressive, backward home.

2) I saw a woman REALLY in fear of losing her job. On Wednesday the management announced that we’d have a meeting today. So we all assumed there’s some big, bad news, and we were all wondering what the bad news is. As we were waiting for the management to come break the bad news, I kept noticing this lady. She’s a newly divorced mother of a 7 year old girl. She looked SO SCARED. It made me really sad–both for her, but also the realization that some people are hanging onto their jobs for dear life…

3) My sister saw a boy walking to high school who was almost literally dressed in rags. She said he looked so incredible poor that she still can’t forget about him. She called the guidance department of school and tried to find out if she can do something to help him, at least get him clothes to wear to school…He goes to a high school in a very well-to-do section of Northern Virginia. It isn’t fair.  Every child should have clothes–they don’t have to be flashy, but every single child on earth should have some damn normal clothing to wear to school. It makes me really mad that some don’t.

These things are making me sad. So I will try to think of ways I could make a difference…Maybe my sister will be able to find out who that boy is…Well, there are also good things that happened:

4) My kids told some really funny jokes today. Every night we talk for a little while before they go to bed. So I ask, “What do you want to talk about?” And my middle son always says “Birthdays!” His birthday isn’t until August, but he likes talking about where the party will be and what kind of cake he’ll have. But tonight, he wanted to talk about MY birthday. So I asked what the boys were going to do for me on my birthday–they are too young to actually plan and follow thru with anyone–I was just curious what they’d say. So, they joked that they were going to build me a big, huge castle out of…boogers. Isn’t that nice? I thought so.

5) I keep seeing normal people with amazing talents. I watch “American Idol” because I have to write about it for work. Long story. I LOVE that show! Not only because Adam Lambert is sooooooo HOT. But because it’s so neat to see all of these normal people with this incredible talent. Along these lines, I discovered that two people I know have remarkable talents. REMARKABLE. Each of these people is the last person on earth you’d expect to have a remarkable talent. Not because they’re  dumb or anything–they just look so normal. But they have something so special. It’s pretty neat.
